Friday Finest: FINE AND FABULOUS @ FIFTY – ANGELA BASSETT

Hey,

This morning I’m introducing Friday Finest:  THE FIFTY SERIES.  Uh huh.  Recognizing that we can be FINE and FABULOUS @ FIFTY too.  So, every now and then I’ll be changing up to make things interesting, giving shine to my favorite lovely ladies at whatever decade feels hot to me – because you can be FIFTY and be a BANGER.  Trust me.  And this morning I’m feeling Miss Angela Bassett.

This gorgeous woman fifty-two year old Goddess of Drama was born in Harlem but was raised in St. Petersburg, Florida.  A former cheerleader and member of the Debate Team, Student Government, Drama Club and Choir, she went on to become a double Yalie – a BA in African-American Studies and of course a Masters of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama.  She pursued New York theater – appearing in two August Wilson plays, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone.  Moving on to film she gained recognition in Boyz in the Hood and Malcolm X but things really got hot in her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress (she was the first African-American to do so) and an Academy Award nomination.

Bassett appeared in a myriad of other films like Vampire in Brooklyn alongside Eddie Murphy and Strange Days (which I happened to love) but who can forget her Bernadine Harris in Waiting to Exhale? (her lighting that car on fire was pure cinematic genius) and her more than convincing Stella in How Stella Got Her Groove Back.  We wished there were more formidable role opportunities for an actress with the incredible abundance of talent of Angela Bassett.
